As of February 11th, Norman North’s students will be wearing their ID’s full time. This new rule was announced on February 4th by Dr. Liesenfeld, stating that “students are not allowed inside the classroom without their ID” (a school safety standard) as well as the commons, revealing that students left without an ID must get a new one, taking time out of class.

This announcement follows a recent lockout that occurred February 4th, preceded by a lockout drill that occurred in January with clear and simple instructions over the difference between lockdown and lockout. These differences are the procedures taken by the staff and students to ensure the safety of the school. Dr. Liesenfeld sent out an email advising students; “find your ID or obtain your backup ID now.” This is also a concern with students and parents because the time-consuming practice of getting a new ID will potentially cut into valuable class time, however, this ensures that every student is able to be identified and ultimately allowed to remain in a safe environment. These new policies have since stirred controversy with students over wearing the ID’s which have not been as heavily implemented in the past. Until the new implementation, the rule was to wear the ID’s in the library and CCC only.

The following is an excerpt from an internal memo from Dr. Liesenfeld:

“Beginning on Monday February 11th. Faculty/Staff, Visitors, and Students are expected to have their ID’s visible at all times when on campus (worn around the neck or attached to shirt by a clip).  The ID cannot be worn on the backpack; it must be on your person, in front, above the waistline. We started with exterior doors, then moved to library, CCC, FRAC, now we are adding classrooms.  At the beginning of each class teachers are to check IDs.

“School safety is our top priority. With 2,400 students and 220 faculty and staff on campus at any given time along with outside visitors, it is necessary that we can ensure that everyone on campus is in fact, authorized to be on campus. Faculty/Staff/Visitor, and Student ID’s are a component of this process. Faculty/Staff, Visitors, and Students are expected to have their ID’s visible at all times when on campus (worn around the neck or attached to shirt by a clip). Everyone has been provided with an ID and additional IDs are available in the commons daily.

“Beginning on Monday February 11th, If a student does not have their ID, they will be asked immediately to secure a backup ID from the commons office. Plan ahead, find your ID or obtain your backup ID now. Securing a backup or temporary ID after Friday will take time out of your day and will predictably be an inconvenience. Avoid any additional headaches and find that ID now, T-Wolves!

“Thanks, everyone…we appreciate you!”
