Peers and coaches selected a girl’s and boy’s senior representative for each sport at Norman North to attend the annual Norman North All-Sports Assembly as a candidate. This year, the All-Sports king and queen were Carson Newmark and Jaycie Tippens, respectively.
However, many Norman North spectators didn’t expect this result.
Some students predicted the winners would be based on who had the best reputation, such as sophomore Lena Hasan who guessed senior Lennon Park would win.
“I heard she was really good at her sport,” said Hasan.
Other students thought the winner would most likely be who was most well-known around school.
“He’s pretty popular around the school,” said sophomore Luci Mears about senior Jackson Koch. Mears knows Koch through swimming and said he was a very good choice to represent the swim team.
However, the majority of students voted because they wanted to support their sport. Mears was one example, and another is freshman Sophia Zhao who voted for senior Parker Gladhill. Gladhill represented volleyball at the assembly.
“Parkers really cool and really good at volleyball,” Zhao said, “I was sad when she didn’t win. I was rooting for her.”
Not many students expected Tippens and Newmark to win. However, sophomore Alaya Jaffery did.
“I voted for Carson Newmark,” Jaffery said, “I wasn’t actually that surprised when I found out he won.”
Overall, whether the candidates won or lost, many said they enjoyed the experience.
“I felt good that I was picked because that means I didn’t have to talk,” senior Bryan Joo said. Joo represented the tennis team. He felt nervous to talk in front of the whole school with his team and said he preferred to walk down the basketball courts and pose for a picture instead.
Senior Kaitlyn Bays, who represented girl’s tennis, enjoyed being an all-sports candidate because she enjoyed having one last senior memory and was glad she could represent her sport.
