Interview with Trevor Lafoon
Last Thursday, January 18th, we had the opportunity to sit down with Head Girls Soccer Coach, Trevor Lafoon to talk about this upcoming season and how successful his teams have been the last three years.
How long have you been coaching the Norman North Girls Soccer Team?
“I have been coaching [here] for seven years and I was an assistant coach for three years [prior] and this is my fourth year as head coach.”
How many state champions have you won?
“Two state championships”
Are you excited about the championship and why?
“I am so excited and I think every year brings new challenges and it’s exciting to watch the girls overcome these challenges. We also have a really good group of senior leaders that I am very excited about”
What do you think our team’s weaknesses are?
“Work rate for sure and practices need to get a lot better. Most of the time we are can be lazy and just go through the motions. Once we have a pretty high success rate but overall I think the girls need to do better working at the practice and pushing each other to better and not wasting practice”
What is your main goal of the season?
“My main goal is to get better throughout the year and not give up more than five goals and win every game when we go to Gulf Shores”
What do you think your coaching style is?
“Hmm that’s tough, I feel like I’m pretty laid back and like to take control of the game with possession rather than rushing [into] things”
Who do you think is our biggest competition this season?
“Deer Creek, Edmond North, and one of the Tulsa schools”
What makes this team better than last season?
“I mean a year older obviously and we have more seniors this year and the majority of our seniors have been playing on varsity a lot so we have more experience and our younger girls have gotten bigger and more confidence”
Why do you think the Norman North girls are so successful?
“I think the Norman North girls are successful because most everyone has played together growing up there whole lives and they all play club together and also all hang out outside of school and practice and it builds a good comradery”
