Civil Resistance

As of press time the poll was still gaining signatures

Within the last week, students all over the nation have created petitions for their schools to be canceled the Friday after Halloween. Students have expressed their concerns with stress and tiredness during the school day and the adjustment to the weekend.

This trend started in Florida and has slowly made its way across the nation. Parents have quickly debunked this goal, stating that it is a trick and won’t happen because kids just want the treat of no school. This desire for no school extends to elementary and middle schools. However, traction quickly picked up, and schools such as Round Rock in Texas gained over 14,000 signatures and other schools such as Mustang High School have already publicized that they will not have school, however they will be open to students who wish to attend.

NPS has developed their own version of this using the website change.org in a petition titled “No school after Halloween for NPS” and was created by Sophomore Class Officer, Brandy Liu. This petition currently has 4,096 signatures and the goal is to get as many names associated with this petition as possible. The number is still climbing. The motivation is “Moore is doing it so are we” which leads people to believe that it may just be a trend, similar to the Raid Area 51. That petition received over 2,000,000 signatures, however, the event received little turnout with just a couple hundred people present and the creators hope it will turn into a yearly event.

As of right now it is unknown if NPS chooses to recognize the roughly 5,000 signatures and cancel school for the first of November. They could choose not to recognize it and allow school to happen as planned, or they can choose to cancel it for the quality of the work-life at school.
