East-Side Beast

The speech and debate team is off to a great start this year after winning second place sweepstakes at the Bishop Kelly tournament in Tulsa the weekend of Nov. 9, positioning many Norman North students to compete for regionals.

It’s always a tough environment when an east-side team competes with western organizations, but the Timberwolf debate team proved themselves to be calm and composed, with 36 total students competing and nine students qualifying for regionals, including Jacob Gray, Katie Beltz, and Emily Turner. The Timberwolves also won second place sweepstakes at the competition, proving once again the competitiveness of east-side teams and the state aspirations of North’s debate team.

“We had lots of students who qualified or placed and did very well at the tournament, and that all culminated in us receiving a second place team sweepstakes award,” Mrs. Crawford, the debate coach, said when asked what she thought about the tournament.
