Cheer gets ready for nationals in Dallas with one last performance at North

The Norman North cheerleading squad performed several cheer routines for their fans Wednesday night, Jan. 23, as they head off to nationals later this month.

The cheerleading event was from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and consisted of several routines that the team plans to perform at nationals this weekend in Dallas.

The energy was high and the crowd consisted of more than just the parents of the team members, as other high school students attended to see their classmates sent off to compete for a national title. The high energy was somewhat due to the excitement of cheer coach David Urmie, who often signaled to the crowd to cheer loud for their girls.

At the end of the night, Urmie had a lot of good things to say about his squad, expressing extreme confidence as they face some of the best cheer teams in the country at nationals.

“As far as tonight,” he said, “it was an incredible preparation heading off to nationals in Dallas. This was the night that we needed in front of all these people, and the girls showed out. They came through; they hit a routine. They’re ready. We’re gonna come back national champions.”

This has been a very successful year for the cheerleading squad. Earlier this year, they were able to become OSSAA Class 6A state runners-up, and on Jan. 14, were given an award from NPS administration for their hard work. Historically, Norman North cheer has been very successful at nationals. Time will tell what happens this year, but their past achievements make them a top prospect for the title.
