Timberwolves Race Past the Broncos in First District Win
The Norman North Timberwolves won their first district game against the Mustang Broncos Thursday, Sept. 20, not only winning their homecoming football game, but also making them 1-0 in district play.
The Timberwolves came out to play the Broncos facing a three-game losing streak, something Norman North Football hasn’t seen in a long time. Mustang was 1-2 before the game, losing to Yukon and Edmond Santa Fe, the only opponent so far who has been able to take down the Timberwolves and the Broncos.
The game itself was hard-fought, with both sides making big plays and neither willing to give up. What made the Timberwolves stand out in this game was their defense. At the end of the night, the Timberwolves’ defense allowed Mustang’s offense to average about seven yards per play. When you take out the few plays that went for 25 yards or more – plays described by coach Justin Jones as explosive – the number falls to one yard per play.
The defense was also able to create three turnovers. One fumble recovery by lineman Magnus McKee, and two interceptions by corner Diontae Newson. At the end of the game, Mustang’s offense was only able to score six points on North’s formidable defense.
While the defense did well against Mustang, the offense cannot be overlooked. Rallying behind sophomore quarterback Jackson Remualdo, the offense ran past the Broncos, scoring 17 points by the fourth quarter. The offensive line was especially impressive, leading to a positive run game and a violent passing game. While the offense still had trouble at times, it was obvious they clicked this game more than they have in the past.
While Norman North holds one of the top spots in their division, they have to get back to work if they want to keep it. The Timberwolves play the Moore Lions next week, who beat their crosstown rival earlier this year.
