The cast of Spongebob: The Musical during the performance.

The Student Matinee of The Spongebob Musical, was on March 1st, from 9 AM – 12 PM in the Nancy O’Brian Center for  Performing Arts. However, the show began a little after 10 AM. The musical starred Psalm Ambos, senior, as SpongeBob, Ellie Bieler, sophomore, as Patrick, Killian Garnard, senior, as Squidward, and Katrina Gedmin, sophomore, as Sandy Cheeks. The Spongebob Musical was very beginner-friendly for those new to the SpongeBob universe.

To summarize the plot: Bikini Bottom is threatened by a volcano that will erupt and destroy the town, and SpongeBob, who is needing to “prove himself” to raise his self-confidence, saves the day when everyone else has given up all hope. SpongeBob: The Musical also has allegorized themes from the modern-day, such as the xenophobia shown towards Texas native, Sandy Cheeks.

The musical was received positively among students and teachers alike. Senior, Brendan Ezell said, “I think it had the highest production value of all the North musicals I’ve seen.” A crowd favorite was when sophomore, Braxton Collett, who played Plankton performed a rap during the song “When The Going Gets Tough.”

This year’s musical was definitely one to remember. The amount of effort and hard work put in by the cast and crew didn’t go unnoticed.  The next school production will be the play Lost Girl, which you can learn about here. Lost Girl does not currently have scheduled showtime at the time of publication.
