Deca Cookies are a staple of food culture at Normal North, but what is the secret behind Deca’s famous cookies?
Well, to begin, the entire cookie operation is funded by a company called ‘Otis Spunkmyer’, a baked goods company that does fundraising along with other things. Norman North gets most of the equipment for baking the cookies from Otis Spunkmeyer, Students in the DECA class begin in second hour they placing the pre-made cookie dough balls on a metal sheet, then they bake in the ovens given to them by Otis Spunkmeyer and after a quick bake they but the cookies into bags stamp them with the individual flavors and sell them to students on Tuesdays and Thursdays
“Not many people know this, but the powder on the snicker doodle cookies is made by us” said student John Chaney “They start out as sugar cookies, and we just toss some cinnamon and sugar on top of it.” he said “strawberry is our least sold and double chocolate is the most sold.”
The cookies went through a lot of trial and error at first, as there was no set measurement for how to bake them, and every oven the students had was just a little bit different than another.
“Now we just toss it in for 10-15 and eyeball for another two minutes,” John said. “Then we take the cookies out, bag them and stamp the flavor indicator on it, or write the flavor on the bag.”
Howl Staff Reviews Cookie:
Jonah: M&M, 6/10 Feels kinda basic, it’s a chocolate chip but without the chocolate chip and M&Ms instead.
Jonah: strawberry 8/10 shockingly simple and slept on, the white chocolate complements the mild strawberry flavor, Very good.
Jonah: chocolate chip 9/10, Simple doesn’t try to be anything special, stays classic, and does that wonderfully.
Kloe: snickerdoodle, 10/10 – It has a bold cinnamon flavor and is very sweet, but not so sweet that it’s overwhelming.
Kloe: strawberry, 9/10 – has a chewy strawberry piece with a little bit of what I think is white chocolate. You can definitely tell it’s a strawberry from the first bite.
Kloe: chocolate chip, 7/10 – very simple but it has a big flavor of vanilla and it’s good, but not my favorite.
