Trae Young, 2017 Norman North alumn, appeared in his first NBA All-Star Weekend where he played in the NBA Rising Stars Game, was a participant in the 3-point shootout contest, and a starter for the All-Star game on February 16th. 

Young, at 21, was selected as a starter on Team Giannis. People of the media, fans, and other players can vote players into the ‘pool of All-Stars’, where they will be selected by the team captains. He participated in the 3-point shootout contest the day prior to the game. Although Young was eliminated in the first round of the contest, he scored several 3-point shots in the first half, including the half-court shot at the buzzer, just before halftime. 

At the end of the first half of the game, Young had 8 points, 3/7 FG, and 7 assists. Team Giannis led with a score of 92-83 over Team LeBron. By the last quarter, it was back and forth between the teams. The final score was 157-155, Team LeBron taking the win.

Young’s time at Norman North consisted of being named ‘Oklahoma’s Sophomore of the Year’ in 2015 and, he led the Timberwolves to the Area Championship. In 2016, his junior year, Young led his team to a 28-4 record which took them to win the regional title and placing second at State. He was named many Oklahoma’s Player of the Year by many different sources and had an incredible senior season, averaging about 42 points per game. 

In 2017, Young committed to the University of Oklahoma after deciding to stay home for college. He had many offers to play Division I basketball including Kansas, Kentucky, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Washington. 

Although Young was only at the University of Oklahoma for one year, he still led the country in assists, points, points per game, and assists per game at the end of his freshman year. He was also awarded ‘National Freshman of the Year’ and ‘Big 12’s Freshman of the Year’. 

In 2018, Young announced that he was going to declare for the 2018 NBA Draft. He was a high prospect and was definitely going to be a top 10 pick. 

In June 2018, Trae Young was selected as the fifth pick in the first round to the Dallas Mavericks. He was then traded to the Atlanta Hawks where he currently plays. His rookie season with the Hawks, he averaged 19.1 points and 8.1 assists per game. In his current season, he is averaging about 29.7 points and 9.2 assists per game.
