Students Give Their Take On Advisory

- Sophia Potts, Writer

Advisory at Norman North is a very controversial topic. Advisory is a 30 minute class every Thursday taught by students’ 1st hour teachers. Advisory covers different topics like bullying and responsibilities associated with technology. Many students find advisory boring and do not like it at all. A poll on The Howl revealed that 77% of the students who voted do not like advisory, 23% of voters enjoy advisory. Students feel that the information presented in advisory is redundant, and it cuts into work time that would otherwise go to core classes, which leads to more homework, or the time allotted by the school for lunch. “There isn’t really a point in advisory because most of us already know this stuff,” Brandon Johnson 10 said, “they’ve been teaching this stuff in school for as long as I can remember.” Another reason students don’t like advisory is that it shortens lunchtime, which most students consider to be their time. “It’s boring, a waste of time,” Matt McCaskill 12 said, “and it cuts back on lunch time.” The school should rethink the curriculum for advisory if they really want students to get something out of it.
