The Story Behind Valentines Day

- Linden Humphrey, Writer

Valentines Day was created in the 3rd century of A.D. by the romans on February 14th. This day was created in honor of three men all who were named Valentine who were executed by Emperor Claudius II. Historians have argue about which Valentine it was actually named after and its history is quite gruesome.

In one of the version’s Claudius had decided that single young men were better soldiers and outlawed young single men from getting married. One Valentine went behind the Emperor’s back and continued to preform marriage ceremonies in secret. When Claudius found out he ordered that Valentine be put to death.

Another version has another Valentine saving innocent Christian’s from Roman prisons because they were often beaten and tortured. When he was caught he was sent to jail where he fell in love with the prison warden’s daughter. He sent he a note and signed it “From your Valentine.” which is still used today.

Valentine’s Day became a holiday February 14th, 496 A.D. in celebration of Valentine’s death. There were big feasts and party’s to celebrate. The oldest Valentine dates back to 1147 written be Margery Brews sent to John Paston. Their parents were in the process of discussing an engagement between them when the letter was sent.

The tradition of giving out Valentines has continued for thousands of years. Back then it was probably exchanging a love letter and maybe wild flowers but nowadays people go all out with giant flower bouquets, candy, and cards. Valentines Day is quite the opposite of what its origin is but all the story’s have to do with people loving each other and doing everything possible to be together, even if it could end in death.
